钽电容全称是钽电解电容，也属于电解电容的一种，使用金属钽做介质，不像普通电解电容那样使用电解液，钽电容不需像普通电解电容那样使用镀了铝膜的电容纸绕制，本身几乎没有电感，但这也限制了它的容量。此外，由于钽电容内部没有电解液，很适合在高温下工作。这种独特自愈性能，保证了其长寿命和可靠性的优势。固体钽电容器电性能优良，工作温度范围宽，而且形式多样，体积效率优异，具有其独特的特征：钽电容器的工作介质是在钽金属表面生成的一层极薄的五氧化二钽膜。此层氧化膜介质与组成电容器的一端极结合成一个整体，不能单独存在。因此单位体积内具有非常高的工作电场强度，所具有的电容量特别大，即比容量非常高，因此特别适宜于小型化钽电容的性能优异，是电容器中体积小而又能达到较大电容量的产品，在电源滤波、交流旁路等用途上少有竞争对手。钽电解电容器具有储藏电量、进行充放电等性能，主要应用于滤波、能量贮存与转换，记号旁路，耦合与退耦以及作时间常数元件等。在应用中要注意其性能特点，正确使用会有助于充分发挥其功能，其中诸如考虑产品工作环境及其发热温度，以及采取降额使用等措施，如果使用不当会影响产品的工作寿命。在钽电容器工作过程中，具有自动修补或隔绝氧化膜中的疵点所在的性能，使氧化膜介质随时得到加固和恢复其应有的绝缘能力，而不致遭到连续的累积性破坏。这种独特自愈性能，保证了其长寿命和可靠性的优势。
