Like other electrolytic capacitors, the chip tantalum capacitor consists of an anode with some electrolytes and a cathode, and the anode is isolated from the cathode, so that only a very small revealing DC current can flow through the capacitor. The anode is made of pure metal. The metal is ground into a fine powder and burned at high temperatures to form particles. This constitutes a very porous anode with a high surface product. The high surface product is directly converted to an increased capacitance value.
The anode is then covered with layers of insulating oxide, which acts as a dielectric. This process is called anodizing. This step must be precisely controlled to reduce tolerances and ensure correct capacitance values, as the level of oxide growth determines the dielectric thickness.
In the case of solid plates but capacitors, the electrolyte is added to the anode by pyrolysis. The solid sheet is then immersed in a special solution and baked in an oven to produce a coating of manganese dioxide. The process is repeated until a thick coating exists on all inner and surface surfaces of the particle. Finally, the particles used in the solid patch tantalum capacitor are immersed in graphite and silver to provide a good cathode connection. Compared with solid chip tantalum capacitors, wet chip tantalum capacitors use liquid electrolytes. After growing the dielectric layer, it is immersed in the liquid electrolyte inside the shell. The housing and electrolyte are used together as the cathode in the wet patch tantalum capacitor.
